When you want to give feedback to a corporation, what’s the first thing you do? If you’re like most, you search for their listing on Google or Yelp and proceed to share your thoughts. Sometimes it’s in an effort to provide praise while other instances call for the need to vent your frustrations. No matter the situation, and whether you’re interested in connecting with a particular employee or an organization as a whole, online review sites often see a ton of traffic.

Yet business owners and professional individuals may find that it’s important to see beyond this idea of an online review, citing the need to cultivate a positive online reputation as a whole. Although the majority of individuals will reference these sites before deciding to make a purchase, there’s a lot more you can do to build customer loyalty.

Whether consumers utilize Facebook, Yelp, ZocDoc, or any other “traditional” review site, there’s no denying that whatever they write will have an impact on your success. Far too often, business owners do not claim their Google or Yelp listing, a step that allows you to have more control over the information that’s represented. A 2017 study showed that 56% of organizations failed to use this tool from Google and 66% never claimed their Yelp listing. Think about all of the online reviews that you’ve received complaining that you weren’t open when Google said you were, especially when they had your hours of operation listed incorrectly – if a simple set of steps to claim your listing could alleviate these issues, wouldn’t it be worth it?

A Social Media Presence

Beyond just Google or Yelp, companies and individuals can benefit from creating an identity on any number of other platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and more. If you have an incredibly unique business name it may not be as critical, but those with the potential to have someone else claim their spot on these channels would be wise to take action sooner rather than later.

Remember, social media isn’t a “set it and forget it” type of approach to managing your online reputation. Depending on your customer base, you might find that you receive a fair amount of engagement, and responding to comments, questions, and private messages in a timely fashion will be critical.
